Beautiful and Traditional: Candidasa, Bali

gallery15-1

If you are looking for a little of bit everything that Bali has to offer then head over to the eastern coast of Bali.  There is a town called Candidasa that has everything from a hike in the nearby hills to touring some of the most amazing sites. Here you can find accommodations ranging from budget to exceptional Bali villas for rent. Not only is there the town but some say that Candidasa actually stretches along the coastline from Manggis to Bugbug in the east.

This area is typically laid back and relaxing.  Many visitors enjoy the various tourist spots in nearby Kuta in the south and then come to Candidasa to wind down their vacation in one of the wonderful hotels or Bali villas rental. There are some black sand beaches but they are really narrow and disappear with the tide. In the middle of the town there is an incredible view of the Lotus Lagoon. The town’s main temple is just opposite and its reflection in the water at certain times of the day can be breathtaking. The origins of the main temple are said to be dated back to the 11th century.

You can always take some time and visit the Goa Lawah temple. This is one of Bali’s key nine directional temples and stands sentinel guarding this part of the coast of Bali from the evil spirits of the ocean. This temple is called the Bat Temple.  This is because it has a cave that is a well-known bat roost. It is a little over 6 miles west of Candidasa, close to Padang Bai, which features a quaint village and a few extraordinary beaches. And if you go about 20 minutes northeast along the coastal road from Candidasa proper you will come upon Karangasem. Just north of this little town you will find the beautiful water palace at Tirga Gangga. It is the home of the Karangasem Royal Family. You can even find some striking views of rice terraces that are prevalent in the valleys of Bali.

If you want a glimpse into the ancient traditions of Bali, then a visit to Tenganan village is the best place to go.  This is one of many Bali Aga villages but only one of the few that actually accepts outsiders to come into their secluded village. They use the money they gain from tourism to supplement the incomes they get from their rather enormous acreages of farmland used to grow food for their village. The Bali Aga believes they are the original Balinese who moved into the mountainous regions of Bali and keep ancient re-Majapahit traditions and culture alive even today. You can buy some rather unique souvenirs to bring to your hotel room or Bali villas rental to pack away for the return trip home.

Candidasa is also a great place to organize a trek up Mount Agung, the holiest mount in Bali. If that isn’t something you can accomplish there are other hikes to be done in the nearby rolling hills of Bali. Speak with your hotel concierge or the managers of any Bali villas for rent and find out who you can talk to about arranging one. If lying on the beach or exploring various coves and beaches is something that peaks your interest then look no further than Pasir Putih, white sand beach, one of Bali’s well kept secrets. It is an isolated stretch of white sand lines with coconut palms. You can find that many warungs around there have beach umbrellas and lounging chairs for rent. So if you are looking to wind down before you head back home, Candidasa might be the place for you.

The Human Interest Rituals and Ceremonies of Bali

9D-Villa on Pankung Sari

As you will find out when you come to visit Bali, the Balinese people have a lot of celebrations that go hand in hand with their numerous rituals. You may even see a procession or two from your villas Bali or hotel room. Not only do they have rituals and celebrations for birth, marriage and death but they have days for blessing livestock and tools used in daily activities. This is because the Balinese people practice Hinduism as well as remembering their pre-Hindu animistic roots, which allows for ancestor worship and the belief that every living thing has a soul.

They have ceremonies at the full moon, new moon, and holidays for the many gods they worship. Their religious festivities can’t be missed with the brightly decorated areas and temples. They have ceremonies for children starting with a ceremony for the ease of birth during the 8th month of pregnancy all the way until they reach puberty, or menek kelih. This ceremony takes place when either the girl starts menstruating or the boy’s voice starts to crack. In the past, this ceremony meant that the person was ready to marry. As part of this ceremony, they children are paraded around the village and announce that they are now adults. It is also to remind the teenager that they need to let go of childish things and prepare for the challenges of adulthood. It is this time in their life, that Hindus practice trikaya parisudha. Trikaya parisudha is actually three types of conduct that need to be purified. These conducts are kiyika, physical actions, manacika which is thought, and wacika which is speech. This isn’t performed by all castes in Hinduism.

One thing Balinese Hindus value is seeking knowledge. They believe that it is important to learn because it plays a pivotal role in their ability to achieve the goal of life as a human. That is why they celebrate Saraswati. This is a day that is dedicated to the Goddess of learning, science and the creative realm. She is also the patron saint of libraries and schools. On this day, prayers are done at temples in schools, home, villages and businesses from morning to noon. You may be able to see children running to their schools with fruit and cakes that they plan on giving as an offering at the school temple from your villas Bali.

One of the more important days that Balinese Hindus celebrate is Galungan. This is the celebration for the victory of dharma, truth and justice, over Adharma, or evil. This celebration lasts 10 days and the Balinese people believe that the gods come to Earth for a visit. They cleanse the temples as well as give offerings and special prayers in order to please the visiting deities. This is the time where ancestors as also celebrated in family temples.  There are numerous feasts and ceremonial dances to entertain the gods. This is a great time to visit the island. You may even get some great deals during this time for hotels and Bali villas for rent.

On the 10th day of Galungan, it is time for the kuningan, which gets its name from the special offerings of yellow rice. This is the day where families come together to gather yellow rice, pray and lay the yellow offerings to their ancestors.  This is the time they believe their ancestors will be heading back to heaven. This is usually done in the privacy of their homes but some may go to their family shrine, which may be located at one of many privately owned Bali villas for rent, or at their family temple. The day after kuningan is a day for rest, relaxation and having fun.

Non-Human Blessings and Rituals in Bali

villa7_400

Bali is truly one of the most interesting places to visit with a ritual or ceremony at least twice a month not including marriages, births or funerals that can happen on any day. But they are truly amazing for the rituals they do to bless the implements and livestock that make their lives better and jobs easier to do. If you go to many areas not far from area villas Bali, you may come upon a celebration that may seem strange to foreigners and tourists.

In Bali, they don’t use machines to harvest their crops or to plow their fields for planting. They use livestock such as cows and oxen to pull their plows. They use chicken, duck and pigs as their sources of meat. There is a celebration called Tumpek Kandang. This celebration is dedicated to Sang Hyang Rare Agnon, the God of All Cattle and Livestock. This is the day where the Balinese people show their gratitude to all domesticated animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens that help one way or another in their daily lives. The cows are washed in the river and dressed in human clothing and cone shaped spirals of coconut leaves are placed on their horns. Even the pigs get their bellies draped with a white or yellow cloth. Afterward, they will be fed the best foods as a show of appreciation. So if you are walking down the lane by your Bali villa rental and see a cow dressed as a human, never fear, it is their day of relaxation.

There is a day dedicated to Sang Hyang Pasupati, or the God of steel implements, named Tumpek Landep. This is the day that the Balinese show their appreciation to the god of all steel implements such as tools and sacred ceremonial keris or sacred swords. If you look out of your villas Bali, you may see lines of people lined up around village temples to have their tools blessed. This is because this is the day that weapons are sanctified especially those that have been imbued with magical power.

A really good ceremony that all people, no matter their walk of life, should take part in is Tumpek Pengatag. This is a special ceremony devoted to the God of All Food.  On this day, every plantation and farm throughout the island, asks for blessing upon their plants to continue giving good crops and products to the humans. The Balinese Hindus honor the plants and trees because they give oxygen, fruit, food, leaves and the breath of the Earth to all people. So if you are visiting Bali during the time they celebrate this ceremony. You can hold your own blessing over the plants in your Bali villa rental as a way to show your appreciation for all they do for the human race.

The final and most important ceremony for objects and ideals is the Galungan.  This is the day that the Balinese Hindus celebrate the victory of truth and justice (Dharma) over evil (Adharma).  This celebration lasts for ten days when the Balinese Gods visit the earth. In order to please the visiting gods, their temples are cleansed and special prayers as well as offering are given to them. Dances are performed to entertain the Gods while they are here on Earth. Ancestors are celebrated in family temples and there are many great feasts going on all around the island. This is one of the best times to visit Bali and enjoy the many celebrations the island has to offer.

Fruits of Labor: The Fruits of Bali

villa6_400

One thing that you can enjoy besides Balinese cuisine, their traditions and gorgeous views all over the island are its unique fruits. You can go for a short walk from your hotel room or villas rental Bali to a local market place and find many varieties of fruit that aren’t normally available in other parts of the world. Their fruit is unique in its size, shape colors and flavors. Here are some examples of what you may find in the stall of the marketplace.

There is a fruit that can be found easily all over the island, it is called the jackfruit. It has a sweet taste and it releases a certain aroma when they ripened.  It has pit in the middle much like a peach. Many people use the jackfruit in local dessert dishes to sweeten it and lend it a pleasant aroma. Many dishes are prepared with this fruit including Es Campur; a dessert made with coconuts, jackfruit, milk and sugar, jackfruit chips and fried jackfruit.  The unripened jackfruit is used to make a curry and a dish called lawar, a favorite Balinese dish made on special occasions. If you venture out of the Bali villas for rent to attend a ceremony, you may be asked in Balinese, “Are you brave enough to eat lawar?”

Another fruit that may be interesting to try is the keffir lime. The main thing that makes this fruit stand out is the rough and bumpy outer skin and it grows on a thorny bush. The leaves are very aromatic and are used as a seasoning. The mangosteen fruit is another famous fruit on the island of Bali. It has s deep purplish red fruit when ripened and has white colored fruit meat. It may take a knife or strong hands to open this fruit.

There is a fruit widely known as the king of fruits.  It is called the durian fruit. This fruit is native to Bali and is usually found from June to August. This fruit when ripened has s scent that can be smelled from a great distance. It has a high sugar and fat content. You can find it in many marketplaces and may find it imported if it isn’t in season. So if you are visiting Bali during the summer months, you should check out the local market and pick some up to take back to the Bali villas for rent and try it out for yourself.

The star fruit or also known as belimbing by the locals is high in vitamin C and the leaves are used as an herbal medicine to help with mild headaches. There is also a hairy fruit, or rambutan. It is a very common fruit that can be found around pretty much every household. This round red fruit can be found in loose cluster and has pliable spikes which give it a hairy appearance. Another native fruit to Bali is salak or snakeskin fruit. This fruit is called that because of the reddish brown scaly appearance of the fruit. It is popular with tourists and locals because of the crunchy yellowish flesh that is mildly sweet and tart.

So if you decided to visit the fresh fruit market during one of your outings away from your villa rental Bali, take a list that has at least two or more of these fruits on it so you many give each a try just to say you did.

Pantai Geger

Living room at night overlooking the bay.jpg

Just south of the gated tourist community of Nusa Dua, down past the world famous golf course, is a little patch of beachy heaven. Directly in front of the Nusa Dua Beach Grill, Pantai Geger is in easy reach of your Bali villa. For a long time it was one of the ‘secret beaches’ which expatriate residents were reluctant to share with tourists, but as the island has seen a marked rise in tourist arrivals it has been well and truly placed on the map. It is eminently suited to family visits as the beach is protected by a barrier reef some few hundred metres from the shoreline and in between is an area of semi-submarine horticulture with fields of kelp beds providing the interesting twin diversions of beauty and industry.

Currently, three rows of sun loungers rest above the high water mark and these are available for free so long as one orders from the restaurant. The menu is interesting and comprehensive, the food ranges from not bad to very good and there are many child friendly items to share with the grownups. Villas in Bali would be proud to be able to supply the range of the Nusa Dua Beach Grill, which as its name suggests, also takes plenty of inspiration from the ocean.

At low tide a fairly wide swathe of beach becomes visible and this is sufficient to fly a kite or play a game of beach cricket. Farming the kelp beds, provides a reasonable living for the locals who send it to Japan for the cosmetic industry. They are a beautiful sight – great as a photographic backdrop for family portraits which serve of a reminder of wonderful days at the beach.

Within easy reach of most villas in the south of Bali, Pantai Geger is reached by a turning just short of the Nikko Bali hotel and is only about 30 minutes drive on a day of average traffic from Seminyak and Sanur.

Around the bay, during all but high-tide, there are many small beach spaces to lay out one’s sarong and towel. Further round the coast, under the temple on the top of the cliffs, is another, more secluded series of small beaches which also make good encampments for small family groups. Care must be taken here as this section is only available at low tide – at high and medium tides it can be a challenge to reach.

Taking a Bali villa for a vacation can be a wonderful way to create a base to see the rest of the island. Day 1 arrive and explore the villa, day 2, rest up and enjoy the private facilities afforded by villas in Bali, day 3 start to take day trips far and wide to find out all that is wonderful about our island.

The Amed Coastal Road

Ocean pool at night.jpg

In the north east of Bali lies the rapidly expanding urban beach sprawl that is Amed. Thinly spread along miles of fascinating coastline, it plays host to hotels, restaurants, shops and Bali villas for rent. A multitude of fascinating coves with gaily painted fishing boats, salt pans gathering crystalline sea salt and several wrecks provide hours of happy beach diversions.

There are many Bali villas for rent in Amed and environs providing all the modern amenities to which we have become or which we would like to become accustomed. Bali villas for rent offer an exceptional experience of luxury for a very modest outlay. Split between several people, even large and ostentations Bali villas for rent are an affordable option for most purses and are a total delight. In combination with well planned itinerary they make a perfect base to enjoy the best of the island.

Most people approach Amed via the main road, journeying around the eastern side of the great volcano Gunung Agung and approaching from the north. This is the most direct route and hence, the route most people take in and out of Amed. It’s easy and does not challenge the senses. Going south, however, is a different story. A quick tour on Google Earth (with the 3D terrain mapping switched on) reveals the magnificence of the landforms. Ancient volcanoes have swept out great sweeping valleys and spurs of fertile soil in an arid landscape which bursts forth with life during the rainy season.

The small road twists and turns, sometimes with switchback climbs and at other times descends through tree-lined valleys which offer shelter to myriad species of birds, mammals and reptiles. But it’s the views which make this journey really memorable; great sweeping views of the tumbling hillside which merges with an ocean which seems to go on forever.

Sometimes the road is somewhat worrying; huge drops to the side which would produce instant destruction if incorrectly navigated, narrowing roads where two vehicles can barely pass. At one point one has to negotiate an old bridge made from girders and railways sleepers. Trucks regularly traverse this bridge so it is more than capable of supporting a typical private vehicle and passengers. Still, it’s good to make the heart beat a little faster from time to time and the enormous rewards of driving this magnificent road far outweigh the minor uncertainties.

Diving in Bali Part 1 – Tulamben

Bali offers wonderful world-class dive sites and the dive companies through which to explore them. The most famous of these is Tulamben on the north coast and the wreck of the USS Liberty which was lost here during WWII. There are an increasing number of Bali villa rentals in this region and some great bargains to be had.

Originally a World War I cargo vessel, the Liberty was one hundred and twenty metres (four hundred feet) long, twenty metres (sixty feet) wide and grossed over six thousand tons. During the Second World War she was refitted as a US Army Transport vessel and on the 11th of January 1942, whilst Philippine bound laden with an Australian cargo of rubber and railway parts, she was critically torpedoed by a Japanese submarine (I-166) in the Lombok Strait. An attempt was made to tow her to Port at Singaraja in North Bali but she foundered and was beached at Tulamben. For twenty one years she lay on the shore and was stripped of cargo and fittings by local ‘business men’.  With the volcanic eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, the Liberty was pushed off the beach into the sea where she resides today, a few fin-strokes from the shore.

Impressively big despite being broken into several pieces, the Liberty’s bow lies in five metres (fifteen feet) and her stern in thirty five metres (one hundred and ten feet) and there are many large holes in the hull enabling easy exploration.  Many species of marine flora and fauna have made their home in The Liberty wreck and countless generations have lived their entire lives within the boundaries marked by her hull.

A little further down the shore is a gentle drop off which begins in a coral garden and extends far down into the depths of the Lombok Strait, far beyond the reach of even professional divers. Reaching some fifteen thousand metres this is the province of large pelagic species which patrol the depths and journeying between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is not uncommon to see Manta Rays, Hammerhead and other sharks, Sunfish (Mola-Mola), many species of Trigger Fish and the ubiquitous Two Bar Clown Fish popularised by Finding Nemo and ever popular with divers looking for some fun. Many villas in Bali have ties to preferred dive operators but of course you are free to select your own. Bali villa rentals offer a great base from which to explore these sites, as wherever you are on the island Tulamben and other sites are not more than a few hours’ drive away.

Villas in Bali are the preferred residences of travellers and holidaymakers and offer a more personalised experience than the typical hotel vacation. Staff become trusted advisors and accomplices to ensure that visitors have the ideal experience, tailored to their own tastes and many people return year after year because they come to enjoy the ease and simplicity of a ‘known quantity’ – trusted staff and premises and a great holiday!
